Umthathi Training Project

By Katlego Ramagaga

Umthathi Training Project, is an NGO based in Grahamstown Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1992 to provide skills training to craft producers in Grahamstown and surrounding towns. The training includes the Community and Home Food Gardening Programme as well as the Africulture Programme which is offered to impoverished communities including informal settlements. Umthathi also provides its services to schools as they have created a special School Gardens Programmes.

I spent a few weeks at Umthathi to see what exactly their training includes and if they have had any effects on the communities they have worked with.

10 Minutes with Boss Lady

I sat down with the Head of Operations Monica Canca to find out more about herself and Umthathi. She calls herself a paper pusher as she spends more time in meetings than being in the field. Listen to Monica as she explains more about what the organization aims to achieve and what her job entails.
